Each store put a personal spin on the day’s event.  The Lincoln Park location had delicious cupcakes provided by Bleeding Heart Bakery, New York had DJ Apple come to spin, San Francisco had Diana Lee come in to do a Scratchboard Demo!  Other stores had airbrush artists giving customers their very own temporary tattoos, live watercolor artists painting throughout the day, and many talented musicians.  The day was full of fun and surprises.  Each store picked a winner for the all-day raffle, who won a 156-color set of Prisma Color Markers, and a winner of the body art demo raffle, who won a free Iwata body art application kit!

All the stores had lots of fun giving their customers a day of discounts, prizes, fun and free entertainment! What a perfect way to celebrate the Spring season!

Double Discount Days and Demos at All Stores!

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

DDD Preview

March Double Discount Days are quickly approaching!  Friday, March 9 through Sunday, March 11, 2012 we will be offering our valued, preferred customers an exclusive discount of 20% off their entire purchases, all weekend long at all store locations!  Throughout the weekend we will also be hosting free demos!  March is Youth Art Month, so in observance we are offering three youth focused demos that are entertaining for all ages, including adults!  Plus, you can leave each demo with your creation (while supplies last)!

Join us in store on Friday, March 9 for a Suminagashi Paper Marbling Demo!  The word “Suminagashi” translates literally as “spilled ink.”  Centuries before the art of marbleizing papers was practiced in Western cultures, Japanese craftsman created patterns by floating ink on the surface of water and transferring it to a sheet of paper.  In this demo you will be able to create your own unique print using this same method!

A Mise-en-Scene demo will be held on Saturday, March 10.  “Mise-en-Scene” (meaning “to place on stage”) is a French expression referring to the physical setting of a stage or performance.  The background scenery is designed to help tell a story in a play or on film by creating an environment.  Create a small scene of your own using templates or from your imagination!

Don’t miss an Impressionistic Marker “Painting” demo on Sunday, March 11!  The alcohol based ink in Blick Studio Markers makes them great for paper applications, but for a really unique drawing experience, try them on clear film during this demo.  Make your drawing into a custom bookmark!

Support the young artists in your family and community!  We hope to see you in stores in support of Youth Art Month taking advantage of our free, fun, and inspirational demos!  Not to mention, great savings!

Discount is exclusive to Preferred Card Members.  Not a member? Learn more about our Preferred Card Program.

10 Steps to Fabulous, Custom Cards!

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

On Saturday, December 10, 2011 our stores hosted a card making demo!  For those that missed it or would like more inspiration, check out this simple card making project for fabulous, custom, handmade cards!  It’s not too late to make your own cards for the holidays.  In 10 simple steps and a quiet evening, you can complete your own set in hardly any time at all!

Materials

Materials: card packs or stationery, water-soluble block printing ink, linoleum block, hard rubber brayer, lino cutter set, and scrap board (matboard, cardboard, etc.)

Optional (but helpful) materials: cutting mat, cutting knife, ruler, pencil, glass palette, and spoon

Photo3

Step 1:  Make sure your block is cut to fit the surface of your card.  Trim larger blocks down on your cutting mat with a cutting knife and ruler.  Map out your design with a pencil on the linoleum block.  Tip: The block will be flipped over to print, so when using text it will need to begin backwards on the top of the block.

Step 2: Begin cutting your design with your lino cutter. All cut! Step 2 Use a variety of blades for different line qualities and details.  Don’t cut too deep into the block; always keep the top edge of the blade above the block surface.  Use an extra, small, block or scrap to test the required pressure it takes to achieve your desired look.  Continue cutting until your entire design has been carved out of the block.  Tip: What you cut will not print, the paper will show through.

Step 3: Pick or mix a color!

Step 4: Lay or squeeze out your color onto a glass palette or scrap board.

Step 5: Use your rubber brayer to pull the ink down. Roll the brayer back and forth to create an even coating of ink on the brayer.Step 5Step 3Step 4

Step 6: Roll the inked brayer on the top of your fully cut block.  Make sure the ink is applied evenly and smoothly across the entire block. Step 6

Step 7: Place your block (ink side down) on the top (front) of your card.

Step 8Step 8 (Alternate)Step 8: Burnish the block to the card.  If the card is smaller, use hands to make sure contact is made between the entire block and card.  Using the backside of a spoon, may be helpful.  Be sure to not slide the block as this will smear your design.

Step 9: Lift up the entire block, starting from a corner, peeling up slowly. Step 9 (Complete)Step 9

Step 10: Print, print, print!
