Blick Art Materials was launched as a retail business in Galesburg in April 1911 with a single pen, the Payzant, as its only product. Now 100 years later Blick is still family owned, still based in Galesburg, and dedicated to serving fine artists, students, teachers, designers, architects, and hobbyists. On Wednesday, April 27, 2011, 100 years later, all of our store locations capped off our 100^th year with festive celebrations!  Those that came in to help us celebrate received free product giveaways and enjoyed some delicious snacks from local eateries. There was a live screen printing demo with free t-shirt giveaways and a block printing demo based off of Print Workshop: Hand-Printing Techniques and Truly Original Projects, a book written by Christine Schmidt, artist and creator of Yellow Owl Workshop. Each store also hosted local musicians and artists that performed live!

Thanks to all that came out to help us celebrate, we had a great time and hope you did too! We’re proud to be a longstanding supporter and advocate for the arts and look forward to the many years ahead!

Naperville North HS Art Club Tie-Dyes T-Shirts

On Tuesday, February 15th, the Blick Wheaton store attended Naperville North High School’s Art Club and worked with the students to tie-dye their art club t-shirts.

Over the next couple of months the Wheaton store will be working with them on additional projects to help spark their creativity. Thanks to Mrs. Janell Matas and all the students of the art club for letting us come out and work with them, we had a GREAT time!

Fashion Week takes place in New York City from February 10th to 17th and is a chance for designers to showcase their talents. These designers all got their start somewhere.

Do you know any budding youth with an eye for fashion? Peak their creative interest in design with the following project ideas — great for the classroom or a weekend project at home!

Button Bracelets:

Button Bracelets are a wearable piece of art with lots of color and texture — a new twist on craft bracelets! A leather wristband is used as a base and takes on a very different look when buttons and colorful wire are added.

Paper Dress – Circa 1968:

Paper dresses were all the rage in the late sixties as the American “throw-away” society emerged. The Pop Art ideal of merging common culture with fine art was expressed in disposable clothing that was in high demand. Although the mass-produced paper dress fad soon ended, the idea has inspired many artists since to create one-of-a-kind original apparel from contemporary fabric alternatives.

Artist’s Canvas Painted Shoes:

Using Tee Juice® Fabric Markers, design a pair of painted shoes reminiscent of a famous artist’s style and choices of subjects and colors.

Kids of all ages had fun at the newest Blick location in University City, St. Louis during Kids Day! There was face painting, arts and crafts, free carnival food, and caracitures for everyone. Thanks to all who stopped by.

Art RockX!

This is a live painting competition where artists compete in various cities and voters choose their favorites online. The closing event, held on January 22nd, was located in Las Vegas and the local Blick store sponsored them by providing each artist with a gift bag. Afterwards, each artist came to the store to shop and pose for pictures.
